At the ball, Daisuke is having a horrible time. He is dancing with each girl (and boy) waiting in line on a staircase. He dances with them for a few minutes, then signals to Taichi, who takes them away. Daisuke is wearing his finest outfit, complete with goggles, which annoys Taichi to no end. Taichi’s current boyfriend, Koushiro, is hanging on his arm, much to the chagrin of Yamato.
Mimi : So many beautiful girls (and boys)! Daisuke is sure to meet someone tonight!
Jyou: And if he doesn’t?
Mimi: (Dangerously) Then this ball will never end.
Jyou: Hoo boy.
Miyako: (Surveying the crowd) Ooh, she’s pretty! I hope Daisuke doesn’t pick her. Nope, he can’t have her, either. I wonder if I can get her phone number?
Mimi: Um....Miyako?
Miyako: Huh? Oh! (She laughs nervously) Don’t mind me. Hey, are those finger sandwiches over there? I’d better go look. (She makes a beeline for the buffet table. Jyou and Mimi exchange looks and shrug.)
Taichi: (Walking over to them with Koushiro beside him) Is the ball to your liking, Majesties?
Mimi: It’s so pretty and pink!
Koushiro: Um, Taichi, isn’t that your old boyfriend Yamato over there?
Taichi: Huh? (He turns to find himself face to face with Yamato.)
Yamato: Hello, Taichi. Your Majesties. I’m sure you’ve noticed my two wonderful daughters. (He points to Sora and Hikari, who are behind him stuffing their faces full of creampuffs. Hikari notices Miyako staring at her, entranced, on the other side of the buffet table and flutters her eyelashes coyly. Miyako squeals.)
Taichi: Uh, Sir, worry not, all the girls will have time to dance with the Pri--Hey! (Yamato grabs him by the arm and drags him behind a wall, where he kisses Taichi full on the lips)
Yamato: How could you hurt me so, Taichi? Aren’t I beautiful enough for you?
Taichi: I told you before, Yamato, it’s over.
Yamato: Well I just don’t accept that. Please, Taichi, love me!
Taichi: Oh no. Don’t give me that ploy again. I’m over you, Yamato. Besides, we’re all out of whipped cream.
Suddenly, Koushiro appears, pulling Taichi away.
Koushiro: Stay away from him, you! He’s mine now.
Yamato: Really, Izzy?
Koushiro: Silence! Only Taichi is allowed to call me that. Come, darling, Prince Daisuke needs you.
Taichi: Hmmph. That brat stole my goggles. (He allows himself to be led off. Yamato stares after them.)
Yamato: Oh, Taichi, how could you have left me like this? Mark my words, Koushiro Izumi, I will reclaim that which is mine!
Taichi takes Sora’s hand and leads her over to Daisuke. The two start dancing.
Daisuke: What’s with the dorky hat?
Sora: It’s a lucky hat, buster. I-I mean, nothing, dear prince. (She gives him a fake smile.)
Daisuke: Are you okay? You look a little blue.
Sora: It’s just the corset. It’s cutting off the blood flow to my limbs and I can’t quite breathe.
Daisuke: Really? So you’re usually a big fat cow, right?
Sora: You tactless jerk! (Slaps him and walks off with her nose in the air. Taichi shakes his head and leads Hikari up to dance with Daisuke.)
Daisuke: Ooh, you’re cute!
Hikari: (Looking over her shoulder) Yeah, that’s great. Say, your sister Miyako’s awfully pretty. Do you think you could give me the number for her private phone line?
Daisuke: Uh....next?
Outside the ball, Ken has just arrived in all his Kaiser glory. He steps out of the carriage and surveys the castle, while the Digimon take a rest.
Takeru: All right, you’re on your own now.
Ken: You’re not coming with me?
Iori: Don’t be afraid. You just have to--
Ken: Who’s afraid? Think of all the things I can do now that I have no supervision! (Cracks his whip)
Takeru: I think we underestimated how dominant he really is, Iori-chan.
Iori: Indeed, Takeru-kun. Oh well. Our work here is done.
Takeru: Those bushes look like a good enough make-out spot for you?
Iori: Why not?
The two trot off. Ken smiles wickedly and cracks his whip just once more for good measure, then heads inside.
Back at the ball, Daisuke is starting to get tired out. He sighs as his eyes travel down the line of girls and boys still waiting for a dance. Suddenly, everyone’s eyes turn to a figure standing atop the staircase. Inexplicably, strains of the song ‘I’m Just a Love Machine’ can be heard playing as Ken steps into view.
Daisuke: Ooh, look at him! What a sexy bitch!
Ken slowly descends the stairs and takes Daisuke’s hand, kissing it.
Ken: I know. Shall we dance?
Daisuke nods mutely as a waltz begins to play.
Mimi: Who is that guy in the weird kinky spandex?
Jyou: No idea. No one seems to know who he is.
Miyako: Cool, he’s got a whip! I wish I had one of those. I wonder if Hikari’s got one... Uh, forget I said that.
Mimi: He’s awfully pretty, isn’t he? I wonder if he likes older women.
Jyou: Uh, dear?
Mimi: Quiet! I’m fantasizing.
Daisuke and Ken slowly waltz together, staring deep into each others’ eyes.
Daisuke: Y’know, it’s weird, but I feel like I’ve met you before.
Ken: Well, I’m sure I’d remember.
Daisuke: You weren’t that guy in the club were you?
Ken: Club?
Daisuke: You know the one where they...I mean, you know...they...
Ken: Oh, that sort of club. No, I don’t go by those places much.
Daisuke: Really? But you’re so beautiful...
Ken: Why thank you. Everyone is staring at us, you know.
Daisuke: Really? I’d forgotten anyone else was here.
Two minutes ago I saw you
And I whispered my how-do-you-do’s
I wanted to ring out the bells
And flings out my arms
And give that whip its dues.
I have found him, he’s an angel
Ken: (Purring) Not quite.
Daisuke:
With the coolest glasses over his eyes
We are dancing, we are flying
And he taking me back to the skies
In the arms of my love I am flying
Ken: (Smirking wickedly) Among other things.
Daisuke:
Over mountain and meadow and glen
And I like it so well that for all I can tell
I may never come down again
Ken: That was the plan.
Daisuke:
I may never come down to earth again.
Ken: Oh, you meant it in the figurative sense.
Two minutes ago I saw you
This whip I wanted to use
I wanted to bring up the handcuffs
The whip cream and creampuffs
While I sing out the news.
Daisuke:
I have found him!
Ken:
I have found him!
Both:
In the arms of my love I am flying
Over mountain and meadow and glen
And I like it so well that for all I can tell
I may never come down again
I may never come down to earth again.
The two of them waltz alone. Sora is looking at Ken with jealousy, but Hikari’s eyes are locked on Miyako.
Sora:
Why would a fellow want a guy like him
A perverted pretty boy
Why does a prince have to be so dim?
I wanted to be his toy!
Hikari: (Looking dreamily at Miyako)
She's a frothy little bubble
With a cute kind of charm
And with very little trouble
I’d hang upon her arm!
Sora:
Oh why would a fellow want a boy like him,
A boy who's merely lovely?
Why can't a fellow ever once prefer
A usual girl like me?
His face is equiside I suppose
but no more equiside than a rose is
Hikari:
Her skin’s probably delicate and soft
Even softer than a doe's is.
Sora:
His hair is no softer than a dog’s
Hikari:
She's as dainty as a daisy
Sora:
He’s not as graceful as a bird
So why is the fellow going crazy?!
Oh why would a fellow want a boy like him?
So obviously unusual?
Why can't a fellow ever once prefer
A girl who's merely me!?
What's the matter with the man?
What's the matter with the man?
Hikari:
Who really needs a man?
Sora gives her a strange look.
Hikari: Oh! What were we talking about?
Ken and Daisuke waltz over to the King and Queen. Sora walks off in a huff, but Hikari goes off to talk to Miyako. Mimi starts dancing with Daisuke, while Jyou stands near Ken and looks uncomfortable.
Jyou: I do hope that son of mine is behaving himself.
Ken: Unfortunately, yes.
Jyou: Um, if you don’t mind my asking....why do you have a whip?
Ken: That’s my little secret.
Jyou: Okay. I didn’t really want to know anyway. (A moment of uncomfortable silence.) Daisuke seems smitten with you, I must say.
Ken: I have that effect on people.
Daisuke: (As he and Mimi dance back towards Ken and Jyou) What’s he saying to him?
Mimi: What difference does it make? I knew you’d find the girl--I mean, boy of your dreams tonight. (She breaks away from Daisuke to have a private chat with Ken.) Do I know your parents, dear?
Ken: No.
Mimi: Well, then you must introduce us!
Ken: Well, my father he... (Trails off, unsure what to say.)
Mimi: Yes, dear?
Ken: And my mother, she....I’m sorry. Will you excuse me? (He runs out of the ballroom.)
Daisuke: What did you say to him?
Mimi: Nothing!
Daisuke pushes past her and runs after Ken.
Jyou: Hey, where’s Miyako?
Miyako and Hikari are seen making out underneath the buffet table.
Mimi: No idea.
Ken runs outside and sits out on the steps. Wormmon walks over to him.
Wormmon: Cin--Ken-chan, what’s wrong? It’s not midnight yet.
Ken: I want to go home. This isn’t me. I’m not usually this dominant, not to mention perverted.
Wormmon: So you’re just giving up?
Ken: I’m not what they think I am.
Wormmon: All they think is you’re the prettiest boy at the ball, and you probably are.
Ken: Well, yes, but-- (He is cut off as Daisuke comes running out of the palace. Wormmon hurries away.)
Daisuke: Oh, good, you’re still here!
Ken: Well, I was just....nothing.
Daisuke: Listen, if Mom said anything mean to you, I’m sorry.
Ken: It wasn’t that. Your parents are way better than my family.
Daisuke: I want to meet your family.
Ken: No, you don’t.
Daisuke: Yeah, I do!
Ken: No. You don’t. Trust me on this one.
Daisuke: That bad, huh?
Ken: They didn’t want me to come here tonight.
Daisuke: Well maybe they were just worried that you might, you know...
Ken: (Raising an eyebrow) Might what?
Daisuke: You know....with the whip and all...
Ken: Whip? Oh, that. (He throws down the whip.) Sorry about that. I don’t know what got into me. I’m not usually like this.
Daisuke: Really? ‘Cause I kinda liked it, to tell you the truth.
Ken: You did? Wow. Scary thing is, I think I like you more now.
Daisuke: Can I ask you a question?
Ken: You just did.
Daisuke: Oh. Can I ask you two questions then?
Ken: (Smiling) Go ahead.
Daisuke: Do you think it’s possible to meet someone and know for certain that he’s the one?
Ken: Oh, definitely. If you’re talking about me, then most certainly.
Daisuke: (Laughs) You’re funny! I never thought I’d feel this way for someone.....especially not someone who just crashed my ball.
Do I love you because you're beautiful?
Or are you beautiful
Because I love you?
Am I making believe I see in you
A boy too lovely to
Be really true?
Do I want you because you're wonderful?
Or are you wonderful
Because I want you?
Are you the sweet invention
Of a lover's dream,
Or are you really as beautiful
As you seem?
Ken:
Am I making believe I see in you
A man too perfect to be true?
Do I want you because you’re wonderful
Or are you wonderful because I want you?
Both:
Are you the sweet invention
Of a lover’s dream,
Or are you really as wonderful
As you seem?
They move in for a kiss, when they are suddenly interrupted by Yamato. He is walking down the steps staring at a mirror, and is oblivious to their presence.
Yamato:
Do I love you because you’re beautiful?
Or are you beautiful because I love you?
Are you the sweet invention of a lover’s dream
Or are you really as beautiful as you seem?
(He kisses the mirror) Damn straight you are!
He wanders off. Daisuke and Ken stare at each other for a moment, then Daisuke laughs and shakes his head.
Daisuke: What a freak! Have you ever seen that guy before?
Ken: (With a perfectly straight face) Never in my life. Now, where were we before we were so rudely interrupted?
The two lean in close and kiss. Ken starts getting little aggressive and starts to push Daisuke onto his back when the clock strikes midnight.
Ken: Damn! I was so close, too! Daisuke, I have to leave. (He gets up and starts running for where he left the carriage.)
Daisuke: Wait! Where are you going? Come back! (He chases after Ken.)
Ken: I’m sorry!
Daisuke: But I don’t even know your name!
Ken trips and falls, losing his glasses in the process. The bell strikes midnight again, and suddenly Ken is back in his rags. He hides in some bushes as Daisuke appears. The prince bends down and picks up the sunglasses.
Daisuke:
Do I want you because you’re wonderful?
Ken: (Tearfully)
Or are you wonderful because I want you?
Both:
Are you the sweet invention of a lover’s dream?
Or are you really as wonderful as you seem?
